You don't need to be a hardball negotiator to lower an internet bill \xE2\x80\x94 you need leverage and the right words. Here are scripts that work, and why.
First, Get Leverage
The scripts only work if you have a credible alternative. Before calling, get at least one competing quote for comparable service at your address. With that in hand, you're negotiating from strength, not asking for a favor. See how to benchmark your price.
Scripts That Work
- The competing quote: "I have a written quote from [carrier] for the same speed at $X/month. I'd prefer to stay, but I need you to match or beat it."
- The renewal: "My contract is up in [timeframe]. What's the best rate you can offer to keep my business for another term?"
- The loyalty ask: "I've been a customer for [years]. New customers are paying less than I am \xE2\x80\x94 can you bring me to current pricing?"
- The escalation: "I understand you can't go lower. Can you connect me with retention/loyalty, who may have more flexibility?"
Magic words: ask for the retention or loyalty department. Front-line reps often can't discount; retention exists specifically to keep you from leaving.
What to Ask For Beyond Rate
If they won't cut the price, ask for more speed at the same price, waived fees, or a rate lock. And always confirm the new terms and renewal language in writing.
