You can have plenty of bandwidth and still have terrible call quality. That's because voice and video depend less on raw speed and more on three quality metrics. Here's the plain-English glossary.

Latency

Latency is the delay for data to travel to its destination and back, measured in milliseconds. High latency causes that awkward talk-over-each-other lag on calls. For real-time voice and video, lower is better \xE2\x80\x94 good connections keep it well under 50ms on-net.

Jitter

Jitter is the variation in latency \xE2\x80\x94 packets arriving unevenly. Even with low average latency, high jitter makes audio choppy and robotic. Consistency matters as much as speed for voice.

Packet Loss

Packet loss is data that never arrives and has to be resent (or is simply gone). On a file download it's invisible; on a live call it's dropped syllables and frozen video. Even 1\xE2\x80\x932% loss noticeably degrades calls.

The takeaway: if calls are bad but speed tests look fine, the culprit is almost always latency, jitter, or packet loss \xE2\x80\x94 not bandwidth. More speed won't fix it.
