When a carrier says fiber "isn't available" at your address, it usually means it isn't built yet. Understanding what a build involves helps you judge cost, timeline, and whether it's worth it.
Lit vs. Unlit Buildings
A "lit" building already has active fiber \xE2\x80\x94 activation is fast and cheap. An "unlit" but "on-net near" building has fiber close by that needs to be extended. A building with no nearby fiber requires a longer, costlier build.
What a Build Involves
- Survey & design: the carrier maps the path from the nearest fiber to your suite.
- Permits: municipal approvals for any street or right-of-way work \xE2\x80\x94 often the slowest step.
- Construction: trenching, boring, or aerial runs to reach the building, then cabling inside.
- Activation: terminating, lighting, and testing the circuit against its SLA.
Cost driver: distance from existing fiber and the construction method (boring under a road costs far more than a short aerial run). Carriers sometimes waive or amortize build cost for longer contract terms.
Is It Worth It?
If fiber requires a six-figure build, fixed wireless or a bonded alternative may serve you faster and cheaper. But for a long-term location with heavy needs, a one-time build (often offset by the carrier over a multi-year term) can pay off. See installation timelines and fixed wireless.
