Why VoIP 911 Is Different
A traditional landline is tied to a physical address, so 911 dispatchers automatically know where you are. VoIP calls can originate anywhere, so the system must be told where each phone is located \xE2\x80\x94 that's what E911 (Enhanced 911) handles.
The Laws You Must Meet
- Kari's Law: multi-line phone systems must allow dialing 911 directly (no "9" prefix needed) and send a notification to a front desk/security when someone calls 911.
- RAY BAUM'S Act: 911 calls must transmit a "dispatchable location" \xE2\x80\x94 enough detail (building, floor, suite) for responders to find the caller.
This is mandatory, not optional: these are federal requirements for business phone systems. Confirm your VoIP/UCaaS provider supports them and that locations are configured correctly for every phone, including remote and softphone users.
Special Attention for Remote & Multi-Site
Softphones and work-from-home users complicate location accuracy \xE2\x80\x94 make sure your system prompts for or detects each user's current location. Multi-floor or multi-building sites need granular location data per device.
